  • Speech by Mayor Naser Rrustemaj

In early 2020, the world faced  a new disease caused by a coronavirus mutation (Covid 19) and , the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern. Coincidentally, this coincided with the bicentennial of Florence Nightingale's birth and was therefore called the year of the nurses. It is this pandemic that is being challenged by nurses even though conditions are not in their favor. The challenges are many: physiological, emotional and safety at the work.

    • Physiological: many health workers were affected by the disease and many of them could not win the battle against it.
    • Emotional: stress caused either by lack of information, or by multiple deaths of people and staff. Or by staying apart form family members for safety reasons.
    • Occupational safety: since health system was unable to provide protective equipment such as gloves and masks, as well as health institutions were faced with the obstacles to fill staff vacancies and nurses were forced to work long hours.

But this pandemic has unfolded to the world how important nurses are in the functioning of health services. They have always been exposed to the dangers as a consequence of their job. Unfortunately these discussions always happen in critical moments and although they should happen permanently. We must not forget that the financial matter often makes nurses work in a second jobs or take long shifts. However they are not superheroes.

The leading role of nurses in the treatment and content of Covid-19 cases was recognized by the World Health Organization. The document highlights the challenges and importance of the nursing workforce worldwide. Nurses are at the forefront of Covid-19 case management and are facing serious challenges in improving their working conditions and recognizing the importance of their personal safety.

This motivated the purpose our congress, which  is entitled "The role, importance and challenges of Nurses, Midwives and other Health Professionals during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic"

Therefore, I kindly ask you to be part of this great event that brings together professionals from all over the Balkans, Turkey,  not only for paper presentation but also to take the opportunity to exchange experiences, learn from each other and consequently draw conclusions on the congress matter of where and how we should seek to enhance the figure of the nurse to the deserved level!

Thank you and looking forward to seeing you in congress!
